Scrying Tonight! Using a Wine Glass as a Crystal Ball

New Year's Eve is a traditional time for fortune telling and divination. If you don't have a crystal ball or dark mirror, but do have a nice glass of wine, you can use that instead. A clear wine glass with a roundish bowl isn't that different in shape from a crystal ball. Filled with white wine it will do the trick nicely. Red wine can take the place of a dark mirror.

Gaze down into the liquid or through the sides of the glass with slightly defocussed eyes. Ask a question about what to expect in the year to come and wait to see if any visions come to you. You might see shapes, patterns or pictures within the glass, or you might get some other psychic impression of what lies ahead. When you've finished scrying, enjoy your wine!

I hope you have a happy New Year!

You can find out more about divination and fortune-telling in my book  Pagan Portals - Scrying which is published by Moon Books.

New Year Resolutions: Looking Back at my 2021 Plans

Last January, as usual, I made a list of 10 resolutions for the year ahead. I generally find I have a greater chance of success than if I make just a single New Year resolution.

At the start of 2021 I hoped we'd emerge from hard times and I'd be able to get out and about without restrictions. My list of resolutions reflected that. I was able to get out more than the previous year, but sadly not quite as much as I wanted. Anyway, I still managed to achieve half of what I'd planned. Here's the details:

1: Do some form of divination at least once a month and blog about it

This was something I've enjoyed doing and succeeded in. For January, the message was Trust in Magic. Always a good thing for a witch to do. You can see the picture of that card from the Messenger Oracle to the left and I've posted links to the rest of my yearly readings at the bottom of this post, if you are interested.

2: Start a new Facebook Live series and share the videos on my YouTube channel

This was one of my major achievements for 2021. Starting in January I used Facebook Live to talk on Magic for the Month, creating 12 videos over the course of the year. I uploaded them to my YouTube channel, which you can find using the link above. For my January Facebook Live talk I also wrote a new guided visualisation called The January Garden. I blogged with the text and a link to the video: http://www.badwitch.co.uk/2021/01/magic-for-month-of-january-video-and.html

3: Do more research into the history and folklore of my local area and blog about it

In June I blogged about a set of concrete benches which look so like a set of megaliths that my local community has given them the name Stonepenge. You can read that here:  http://www.badwitch.co.uk/2021/06/weird-london-stonehenges-brutalist.html

4: Continue using the London Lore Tarot to explore esoteric London

Sadly I didn't do this, but hope I will in the future.

5: Start to visit all the Hawksmoor churches and blog about them.

This was another thing I didn get to do in 2021. Maybe I will in 2022

6: Blog about the trees of London

I've been particularly grateful to friends for sending me photos they've taken of trees in and near London.
Technically a tree in my neighbour's garden counts as being in London and I wrote about that: http://www.badwitch.co.uk/2021/09/pagan-eye-sycamore-seeds-on-tree-in.html

7: Walk a lost river in London

No, I didn't do this. Maybe next year.

8: Visit a historic or sacred site outside London I've not been to before

I tried to do this when I visited St Cedd's Well earlier this week, but then discovered it was technically just inside Greater London. It was still a lovely place to go: http://www.badwitch.co.uk/2021/12/sacred-sites-st-cedds-well-north.html

9: Finish writing another book

Well, yes. I don't think I've mentioned this on my blog before, but back in January 2021 I started a course to write a novel in 26 weeks, which I completed. I've edited the book since then, but haven't yet decided whether to self-publish it on Kindle or whether to submit it to traditional publishers. The book is called Erosion: Of Friendship, Dreams and the Edge of a Cliff. The blurb I wrote for a potential back cover is: "She wanted to write a book about a perfect summer by the sea. She didn’t want it to be a tale of terror."

Also, under my name Lucya Szachnowski (Lucya Starza is the pen name I chose because Starza is also a family name from my Polish relatives), I self-published a short book of poems about my memories of growing up in the south London suburb of Penge. It's called Poems by a Pengeuin - A Scrapbook of Memories. You can find it here if you are interested: https://amzn.to/3z8MgJr

10: Create a candle labyrinth

No, I didn't do this. It's been on my list of resolutions for several years and for some reason I never seem to achieve it.

Seasonal Mandalas

This wasn't originally one of my 10 resolutions, but in January 2021 I decided to create four seasonal mandalas using natural items. The picture to the right shows my mandala for winter, created in January and showing how much colour there still was to see. Here are links to the others:

Sacred Sites: St Cedd’s Well North Ockenden

Even on a grey and misty day in the middle of winter, St Cedd’s Well feels as though it has calming and healing energy. I visited the well, in the grounds of St Mary Magdalene Church North Ockendon, Essex, on the way to seeing relatives on Boxing Day.

I'd been looking at my list of resolutions for the year and saw one I hadn't done yet was to visit a sacred site outside London that I hadn't been to before. Looking at the Megalithic Portal website, I spotted St Cedd’s Well as being a short detour from my route. I'm glad I went there as it is a lovely, peaceful place.

Steps lead down from a clearly marked gate in the churchyard to the well, which is housed in a brick surround with a wooden roof. A hand-driven pump at the side lets you draw water from it, and a channel from the well runs down into a small lake. You can also sit on a bench to once side and enjoy a rest and quiet contemplation. I have no idea if the water is drinkable. I won't be trying that, but I will be using the water for scrying on New Year's Eve.

The well gets its name from a Christian missionary who, according to legend, converted East Saxons to Christianity after 633AD. It's said he used the waters for baptism. However, it's also possible that the well was also considered sacred by pagans before that time.

A more grisly fact of history is mentioned in an article in the Romford Recorder, that William the Conqueror issued a grant for St Mary Magdalene Church to be a “church in which the examination of the judgement of fire and water is held by ancient custom”. Judgement of water was one test used on people suspected of witchcraft. If you sank you were innocent, but if you floated you were guilty. Thankfully there's no records showing this was actually done at St Cedd's Well, just that it could have been.

I later discovered that I hadn't achieved my goal of visiting a sacred site outside the capital, as North Ockendon is actually the easternmost and most outlying bit of Greater London. Still, it seems very much a country area and I'm very pleased I paid a visit.

My Yule Gifts: Witchy Wall Ornaments & Visiting Family

In the photo are two great witchy wall plaques I was given at Christmas, one from a friend and one from my niece. I love them both and will hang them up in my kitchen. However, the best gift of all this year was being able to visit family again. We were all very careful and did lateral flow tests beforehand, but being able to share a meal with loved ones was something I was so glad to be able to do, considering none of us in England were able to do that the year before.

I really hope your Christmas was a happy one, with lots of sympathy going to those who were ill or had other misfortunes over the holidays. I'm wishing that 2022 will bring better things for everyone.

Folklore: Revealing a Wassail Doll or Christmas Doll

That video is my attempt at a Wassail Cup, or Vessel Cup, Christmas Doll. I love all folklore related to dolls and learnt about this curious custom in The English Year by Steve Roud.

He explained that in past centuries, girls or women would go around houses before Christmas displaying a doll in a decorated box or bowl, singing a wassail song. It was called a Vessel Cup, but that's probably a corruption of wassail, which I've blogged about earlier. The doll would be decorated with evergreens among other things and then covered with a cloth. The carriers asked people if they wanted to see inside, and only reveal the doll if they said yes. Sometimes people would have to pay a coin or two for the privilege.

My doll is in the Wassail bowl I found in a charity shop. She's a vintage tree angel, although only about 40 years old and made of plastic rather than anything antique. To decorate her, I went into the garden and picked ivy. I couldn't find any holly with berries on it - or mistletoe - but I did find a tiny rosebud that had remained undamaged despite the morning frost. I picked that to put in her hands.

I think this might be the start of a Yuletide tradition in which I decorate a Wassail Cup Doll every year, and photograph or video her for the blog. If you prefer to see a regular photo of this year's effort rather than the video, I took one of them too and you can see it to the right.

Doing a web search for more information about Christmas dolls, I found quite a bit on the blog In Search of Traditional Customs and Ceremonies: https://traditionalcustomsandceremonies.wordpress.com/2015/12/31/custom-demised-the-vessel-or-wassail-cup/

National Geographic also some information about Nisse Dolls, a Scandinavian traditional of decorating dolls that look like gnomes with red hats: https://www.nationalgeographic.co.uk/family/2020/12/seven-symbols-that-say-christmas-around-the-world

You can find out more about other doll traditions in folklore and witchcraft in my book Pagan Portals - Poppets and Magical Dolls.  It is published by Moon Books.

Interview with Tylluan Penry, Welsh Witch and Author

Here's an interview with witch and author Tylluan Penry, whose latest work is a short horror story in a collection called Among the Headstones: Creepy Tales from the Graveyard

Q: I've heard you talk at Witchfest about growing up in a Welsh village where folk magic practices were the norm. Would you like to tell us about this?

A: Well, I grew up in a Welsh city initially (Cardiff) but it was surprising how much folklore and folk magic persisted even then. When I was a child, I loved chatting to our older neighbours and sometimes they would let slip bits and pieces that were definitely pagan and magical in nature although they didn’t like answering direct questions very much! It was a bit like piecing together a jigsaw puzzle without a picture on the box. My father was keen on folklore and local history, so I learned a lot from him too, although his real interest was alchemy.

On my mother’s side, I came from a family of witches, but all they ever did was hex. It was very scary because they had no moral brakes, so if they bore a grudge, for example, they just acted on it. I was always afraid my mother would kill me and bury me under the cabbages.  She did in fact put me in hospital with one of her hexes. It was a horrible experience especially as I was pregnant at the time.

I never understood why my family were like that. Yes, I learned some things from them, but also realised that I didn’t want to follow their path, so eventually I struck out on my own. This grew into what I called ‘Seeking the Green’ which was the title of my first book about paganism. My path became more nature based, and I have always enjoyed it.

However, leaving that sort of family group was a bit like being in the Mafia. You couldn’t choose to leave. They didn’t allow it.  This was what made me research and practise psychic self defence. It was necessary for myself and my young family and this explains my interest in the darker side of magic and witchcraft. Sometimes we need to know what’s out there so we can protect ourselves.

Although I can’t say that folk practices were the norm everywhere, I do remember one day when my mother was up to her tricks again and my much loved mother in law (who was not a witch and actually went to church) rolled up her sleeves and told me to get some old shoes. She threw these on our open fire (we had open hearths in the house back in those days) along with a LOT of table salt. (Actually you have to be careful throwing salt on the fire, it’s a bit risky because it spits in the flames). Anyway, my mother in law stood there, muttering over the flames (I really wish I’d been able to hear what she said, but she never told me) but obviously it was something she believed would drive the ‘evil’ out. And it worked.

So yes, I think there was a lot of folk magic back then. It wasn’t always talked about, but it was there all the same, and when necessary, people would do what was needed. There were tin baths that foretold the snow, pictures flying off the walls foretelling deaths, ghostly white hands knocking at the windows.  Not really horror, but close.

Q: Your story  ‘The Legend of Merv the Swerve’ (published in the anthology Among the Headstones: Creepy Tales from the Graveyard) contains many elements of Welsh folklore and tradition. What inspired you to write this story?

A: The story is an amalgamation of tales I’d heard years ago (My husband worked in a cemetery during the summer holidays when he was a student), and they just grew from there, mixed up with plenty of local bits and pieces. I keep notes of anything I’ve heard (on buses, in shops, on the street) that strike me as funny or surreal. I live in the Rhondda Valley now, (it’s the area where they filmed the series ‘Stella’) and I really love the way people can tell stories without even trying. They’ll start off, ‘Do you remember Mrs Jones…’ and it flows on from there.  Plus of course I love the nicknames. They usually rhyme, so in this story there is Merv the Swerve, but also a cat called Cledwyn the Bedouin.  The nicknames can open up huge narratives by themselves. Some are mentioned in the opening paragraphs of the story.

I mention in my biography that I live opposite a large cemetery, which is famous for its many, large stone angels, hence the stone angel in Merv the Swerve although the incident with the golf ball actually happened, only in a different cemetery (in the next valley across from me).

Q: On what Welsh customs, myths and traditions did you draw for this story?

A: You’ll find most of the myths in the opening paragraph, such as the way we call mist dragon’s breath, or the long legged man stalking through the valley… they are all real traditions, things I heard about when I was growing up. I tried to weave snippets into the story, without making it seem too forced.

Q: What led you to becoming a full-time witch and author?

A: As I’ve said, I was brought up in a family of witches, and branched out on my own, because I didn’t like the sort of things they did. They were extremely powerful, especially my mother who was blessed with power but little or no moral compass. It’s an awful combination. But the pagan aspects of the spirituality stuck with me, and I love that.

As for why I became an author, I have been writing since I was about six. I just love it. It was an escape for me from a very unhappy childhood.  I haven’t written short stories in several years, so it was lovely to write ‘Merv the Swerve’ for Rayne’s anthology. I really enjoyed myself and I hope it shows.  I’ve always been a bit irreverent!

With my non-fiction, as my children grew older, I realised they might be a bit witchy, but they were not very interested in following my path. I then thought about other solitaries, struggling on their own paths, and decided I would write about my own journey so they could pick up where I left off. (Actually, I have a small, very witchy granddaughter who seems to instinctively understand magic, which is quite awe inspiring for me!  Perhaps the witchcraft has missed a generation!)

The reason I sometimes write fiction is that my children used to like me to write stories for them. I would then read them aloud (something else I enjoy) and make sure that each section ended on a bit of a cliff-hanger so they wanted me to read more to them the next day.  I try to include elements of paganism, folklore, horror and witchcraft in all the stories, although it’s a bit of a balancing act to ensure I don’t overdo it.

Q: I know you have written a book on psychic self-defence: The Essential Guide to Psychic Self Defence. Tell us about this.

A: I learned a great deal on this topic when I was trying to get away from my mother’s family.  This book gave me free reign to delve into the darker aspects of the Craft. I then began helping other people who felt they were under psychic attack (it’s much more common than we might think.) Psychic attacks are many and varied but usually follow a similar pattern which is good because we only need a handful of methods to deal with most of them.

It’s easy to learn just a few methods of psychic self-defence and to learn them well. That gives us confidence and confidence makes it so much easier to defeat any attack.

I always feel that being prepared is one of the best things we can do to protect ourselves. We don’t need to be paranoid, just aware. The book’s chapter on psychic armour is very useful as are the sections on cleansing and psychic protection. I try to deal with just about everything that might be an attack (even vampires and werewolves), and then go on to explain the main methods for dealing with them.

I built up an extensive set of case notes built up over the years, and was able to draw on some of these situations and remedies in my book. Most psychic attacks come from living human beings rather than supernatural entities and are fuelled by jealousy and spite rather than malevolent entities.

Q: What are your best tips for psychic self-defence and protection against potentially harmful supernatural entities?

A: The main defences are very simple: cleansing, protection and laughter. That last one is important because we must not show fear, no matter how bad the attack seems.  Psychic attacks feed off fear. Psychic self-defence may require lengthy cleansing and protective work, but it’s the best way to banish whatever is out there. Cleansing can be as simple as spring cleaning, or involve salt, incense, bells etc. Bells are my favourite method. You can feel the atmosphere changing when you ring them.

Q: What personal experiences have you had in dealing with ghosts or spirits of people who have passed?

A: My childhood home was very haunted, and I think remains so. Some houses absorb negative energies over time, and they can take a lot of cleansing.  Seeing ghosts however, isn’t a big deal when you’ve seen enough of them. We also have a House Brownie here who is good at finding things but takes most of my spoons. My present home is also very haunted but it doesn’t bother me. We hear footsteps, knocking at doors, ringing a bell, occasional ghostly figures… there is even ‘someone’ who regularly types sentences on my phone and my computer (a bit like the Dodleston Messages). That can be a bit creepy. The important thing is to communicate with these entities, recognising that we have our space and they have theirs. If they promise to not frighten us, then we must do our best to avoid annoying them.

To do this, it’s vital to be firm; don’t show fear, but do show respect. Most times this will work. Although some ghosts and spirits like to frighten people, most don’t.  Their power is nothing like as great as we might think. And don’t forget that the living can cause many paranormal events too!

Q: How does your knowledge of real-world magic influence the fiction you write? Or are your fantasy and horror stories derived purely from your imagination?

A: There’s obviously a lot of imagination needed in order to write fiction, though I do deliberately include magic, and sometimes horror.  It’s such a big part of my life that I couldn’t leave it out, although I don’t want to appear ‘preachy’ with it, just to let it gently seep through the pages. Magic can happen silently, it’s not just about rituals and chants. My book Magic on the Breath deals with casting spells without even speaking, just allowing the intention to pass out of us on the breath.

Q: What message do you have for readers of A Bad Witch's Blog?

A: Be yourself. Don’t let others make you feel you have to be ‘doing’ witchcraft all the time in order to be a witch. Sometimes we need a break. Sometimes our path will change or grind to a halt. It doesn’t matter. When you’re a solitary you learn from others but practise to please yourself.

It’s a bit like writing: never stop practising, never stop learning.

About the Author

Tylluan Penry is a pagan solitary witch who has devoted much of her life to teaching about the Craft. She was born and brought up in a family of witches (on her mother’s side) although all they ever did was hex. It was a horror story in its own right! When she managed to leave this tradition (and her family, though it wasn’t easy) she moved on to develop her own solitary path which she called ‘Seeking the Green.’ Over the years she has developed this further and written about many topics including Ice Age spirituality, the Anglo-Saxons, knot magic and magic on the breath.

She is married, has a large family, including grandchildren, dogs, and lives in a rather ramshackle home with an overgrown garden, together with ghosts, spirits and the Gentle Folk. There is a huge cemetery opposite her home which ought to be scary but is actually very serene and peaceful. She has always loved writing, and wrote her first (very) short story when she was six, soon progressing to full-length stories. She has now written almost 30 books, both fiction and non-fiction. Most can be found here: https://shop.thewolfenhowlepress.com/

Some of her fiction is on Kindle under the name T P Penry. Her chapter in the anthology, ‘Among the Headstones’ is based firmly in Wales, with a smattering of golf balls, gravestones and the Highway Code. She has always believed that creepy stories need a good pinch of humour in order to work well (at least, in her experience.)

Tylluan also has a YouTube Channel, with more than two hundred videos about solitary witchcraft here: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC48MN8sa7_lFsBX9v2ZAeAg/videos

About Among the Headstones: Creepy Tales from the Graveyard

Among the Headstones: Creepy Tales from the Graveyard edited by Rayne Hall, presents 27 of the finest - and creepiest - graveyard tales with stories by established writers, classic authors and fresh voices.

Here you'll find Gothic ghost stories by Robert Ellis, Lee Murray, Greg Chapman, Morgan Pryce, Rayne Hall, Guy de Maupassant, Myk Pilgrim, Zachary Ashford, Amelia Edwards, Nina Wibowo, Krystal Garrett, Tylluan Penry, Ambrose Bierce, Cinderella Lo, Nikki Tait, Arthur Conan Doyle, Priscilla Bettis, Kyla Ward, Edgar Allan Poe, Paul D Dail, Cameron Trost, Pamela Turner, William Meikle and Lord Dunsany who thrill with their eerie, macabre and sometimes quirky visions.

You'll visit graveyards in Britain, Indonesia, Russia, China, Italy, Bulgaria, Thailand, USA, Australia, South Africa and Japan, and you can marvel at the burial customs of other cultures.

Now let's open the gate - can you hear it creak on its hinges? - and enter the realm of the dead. Listen to the wind rustling the yew, the grating of footsteps on gravel, the hoo-hoo-hoo of the collared dove. Run your fingers across the tombstones to feel their lichen-rough sandstone or smooth cool marble. Inhale the scents of decaying lilies and freshly dug earth.

But be careful. Someone may be watching your every movement... They may be right behind you.

Pagan Eye: Sunrise at Stonehenge - A Screenshot

This is the sunrise at Stonehenge this morning. I wasn't there in person - although I wish I had been. I took a screenshot on my computer when I watched it livestreamed by English Heritage. You can still watch the recording on the YouTube channel

Things might be very difficult for all of us at the moment, but the rising sun after the shortest day and longest night is always a moment of hope. I am also glad that now we can watch events like this wherever we are in the world.

On each Pagan Eye post, I show a photo that I find interesting, with a few words about it. I'm not quite sure what I'll be including - it could be a seasonal image, a pagan site, an event, or just a pretty picture.

If you want to send me a photo for a Pagan Eye post, please email it to badwitch1234@gmail.com Let me know what the photo shows and whether you want your name mentioned or not. For copyright reasons, the photo must be one you have taken yourself and you must confirm that you are submitting it for A Bad Witch's Blog.

Yule Poems: A Solstice Hymn to Ancient Gods

Here's a poem for the Winter Solstice. I wrote it remembering a solstice spent a Avebury stone circle. This year I'll be watching the sunrise livestreamed from Stonehenge rather than visiting in person. I don't think you need to actually be at an ancient site in order to be there in spirit:

A Solstice Hymn to Ancient Gods

I sing a hymn

To the ancient Gods

Of the standing stones

At Solstice dawn.

I sing a hymn

To the ancient ones

I never knew

From the distant past

I sing a hymn

To all of us

Who stand here now

As the sun returns

I sing a hymn

For the world at large

In future's hope

Of brighter days.

(The poem is copyright Lucya Starza)

Books: Yuletide Journal & Secrets of the Yuletide Nights

Here's an article by by Ædith Hagenaar and Jeanne Ruland using material from their two books:  Yuletide Journal and Secrets of the Yuletide Nights.

Yuletide is initiated by an eternally repeating natural event: the Winter Solstice on the 21st of December.

Winter Solstice – Yulefest

On the 21st of December, in the darkest and longest night of the year, the sun reaches its lowest point – the light dies symbolically. An interesting phenomenon now occurs: the sun seems to stay at this lowest point for three days (this is due to the proximity of the earth to the sun, and the speed and rotation of the earth). In the sky the sun resides in the constellation Crux (Cross), however, in the Northern Hemisphere this is only visible south of the Tropic of Cancer. It is not until the 25th of December that the sun rises again and moves visibly northwards – on its way to its highest point. This is when the child of light is born.

Midwinter, which is also called ‘Yulefest’, is a festival of the sun and the earth. It is a time of reflection, of silence, of the consecration and blessing of that which will reveal itself during the new cycle of the year. It is a time of purification and preparation, of looking ahead to what is to come. After the night of the Winter Solstice, the newborn light must be nurtured in the mother’s womb to become strong enough to rise.

In ancient times the winter solstice was a mothernight because the light was thought to be produced in the womb of the Earth or by the great goddess. In the ‘Edda’, a collection of Nordic poetry from the 12th and 13th centuries, we find in the sacred night (from 24 to 25 December): ‘a daughter is borne by the radiant goddess, before the wolf strangles her.’

The period directly after the solstice was also called ‘wolf moon’ because legend has it that the ‘wolf’ had tried to devour the sun. For example, it was assumed that the sun – symbol of the new light, which can easily be covered up and devoured by past events – should be cherished. The rebirth of light has already taken place, but the coldest and hardest time of winter is still ahead of us.

The winter solstice is celebrated to remind us that the darkness that lies ahead has already lost the battle. This gives us courage, strength, and hope to face the time ahead with confidence. On the 21st of December the sun will arrive in the sign of Capricorn, giving us steadfastness and perseverance in our own ascent upwards.

The Enchanted Nights

The Yuletide nights are the nights between the years, no-man’s time, the time of transition and mysticism. The sun, Mother Earth, even us humans, seem enchanted. The word Yule, Jule or Joel has its origin in Germanic (jehwl), from Indo-European (jek), and means spell, incantation or enchantment. Thus, Yule nights are “enchanted nights”. With the exercises and rituals in this workbook, you have a tool to invite that enchantment into your own life and use it for the better.

Yuletide is a mysterious and mystical time in which all portals to other dimensions are open. These extend from the human and physical realm, the realm of the dead, the realm of spirit creatures, the realm of the angels, up to the cosmic realms. A stream of blessings descends on the earth. Renewal and healing is possible at all levels. What makes Yuletide so special has nothing to do with religious rituals and customs, and everything to do with it being a cosmic event, a natural event that repeats itself year after year, regardless of fashion or spiritual trends.

Throughout history, this special time has had many names and has been celebrated in many ways. But the essence of these sacred nights – the eternally blessing light, the gauging and (re)negotiation, and the gate to renewal – has remained the same. We live in a time of change. Many things find their way back to their origin. Circles close. There are more opportunities than ever to shape the celebration of this sacred time. Those who consciously experience these nights can favorably influence the course of the coming year and thus lead a fulfilled life that is in accordance with their higher nature. That is why I would like to present to you a number of traditions, customs, ancient and new ways that will inspire you to consciously and actively celebrate this magical time.

Wicke Days

In addition to the rituals and customs in the Yuletide nights, the days during Yuletide have a special predictive value. These days are called Wicke days. The word ‘wicken’ is associated with the word ‘dowsing’, and means divination or prediction – the words witch and wicked stem from it. Each day represents a month – what happens that day has predictive value for that month.

By consciously practising the rituals and customs during the Yule nights and Wicke days, you create a powerful energetic framework to close off the old, and shape the new year. You generate an energetic grid or field, and every practice and every ritual adds pure, intentional energy to it. Each Yuletide night builds on the previous one and in this way you recharge your personal blueprint for the coming year.

This is a sacred process – give yourself the space and safety to immerse yourself in it. Know that the more honest you are with yourself, the better the results will be. During all practices and rituals, keep yourself in a field of warmth and appreciation, and be gentle to yourself. This is your own process, in which nothing has to be done – you are free to spend as much and as little time and space on it as feels right to you.

Secrets of the Yuletide Nights was written as an aid to Yule and Wicke practices. In the book you will discover old, matriarchal traditions, customs, stories and spells, that in this modern age can help you feel awake, meaningful and fulfilled. This is complemented by practical tips and exercises to help you make each Yule night enchanting and sacred, and prepare vibrationally for the New Year.

Tarot: The Wisdom Keeper, The Tower and Dreaming

Last night, before going to sleep, I drew a card from The Witches' Wisdom Tarot. It was 17 - The Wisdom Keeper. In the Rider-Waite-Smith Tarot, this number corresponds with The Tower, a card of calamity, but in this deck it means something different - wisdom that can be learnt through sudden and unexpected change.

When the Wisdom Keeper appears, "The Pilgrim feels the suddent shift, feels electricity charge the Air and prick her skin, feels her breathing shorten and the beating of her heart quicken." So says the book. The Wisdom Keeper can take many forms, and be found in all lands, but she is most often found by entering the darkness. Perhaps it is the darkness of a cave, or a tipi, or a tent in the desert, or just in the darkness of the long winter night. The words in the book continue:

"The Pilgrim has journeyed a long way to receive enlightenment. She sits before the Wisdom Keeper. A sacred bundle lies open between them, revealing the medicine within - healing plants and offerings, objects of power and tokens of revelation. They are spread out upon the ground, each on a part of the mystery hiding in plain sight."

I went to sleep after seeing that card, and I dreamt that I visited a shamanic circle. Not one in a cave, tipi or desert tent, but one in my home city in contemporary times, with people dressed in ordinary clothes and nothing particularly unusual in the room in which we met. We sat on the floor and began a journey together, closing our eyes and letting our spirits travel towards a place of knowledge. I tried to follow, but was interrupted. My phone went off. It was something important - a real world issue I had to deal with - but I was still embarrassed. I should turn my phone off before the start of any ceremony.

When everyone returned to the normal time and place, I apologised. "It's okay," said the woman leading the journeying, the Wisdom Keeper in jeans and a jumper. "There will be other times." She smiled and hugged me, forgiving me.

I wanted to be hugged, but recoiled. "We should be distancing," I said. "I'm trying to be careful."

"Yes," she said, "but this is a dream. And you have other friends."

Suddenly the scene changed, as things do in dreams, and I was in my own witchy room at home, sitting in a circle. Instead of humans around the edge there were objects - things I owned and used. There was the spent match with which I'd lit my Peacefires candle; there was the bag I take to workshops; there was my phone... And I realised something I knew before but now knew in a deeper way - that spirit resides in everything. These are also my allies in my practice, even in difficult times.

I know what messages I'm taking from the Wisdom Keeper. What wisdom might she offer to you?

Yule Gifts: Bewitched Botanicals, Minoan Tarot, Craft Kits

This December I've been blogging about gift ideas from crafters and small businesses. I know many of us prefer to buy Yuletide presents from independent traders rather than big companies. We're getting close to the last posting dates before the holidays, so make sure you don't miss out on any of these lovely suggestions for witchy presents:

Bewitched Botanicals Soap and More

I'm a huge fan of Bewitched Botanicals soap - I always use it as it smells and looks lovely, and is kind to my sensitive skin. The range includes whips, scrubs, melts and other gorgeous toiletries too.  It also makes fantastic Yule gifts. One thing that caught my eye on the website is the Krampus-inspired Mystical Melt Collection (pictured). It offers 4 seasonal wax tarts in a nifty gift box: 1 x Krampus, 1 x  Krampus Kandy, 1 x Belsnickle and 1 x Frau Holle. The last posting to ensure you get things before the Christmas break is early on Friday 17 December, so have a look on the website today if you want to get an order in for that.

You can find the website here: https://bewitchedbotanicals.com/
